Phakic Intraocular Lens- ICL Surgery

General Information
Phakic intraocular lenses are special lenses placed in front of or behind the cornea while leaving the patient’s own natural lens in place, used to correct refractive errors. They are an ideal option for those who do not want to use glasses or contact lenses, have thin corneas, or are not suitable for laser surgery.

Who is it Suitable For?

  • Patients whose eye prescriptions are too high to be corrected with laser
  • Those with corneal thickness insufficient for laser surgery
  • Individuals whose eye structure is suitable for phakic lens placement

Stages of the Procedure

  1. Anesthesia: Local or general anesthesia may be preferred.
  2. Lens Placement: A phakic lens is placed inside the eye, in front of or behind the natural lens, through a small incision.
  3. Recovery: The procedure is short and the patient is usually discharged the same day.

Recovery Process

  • Visual clarity increases in the first few days.
  • Mild discomforts may occur but usually resolve quickly.
  • Doctor follow-ups should be done regularly.

Advantages

  • Provides an effective solution even in high refractive errors.
  • Since the natural lens is left in place, the procedure can be reversed if necessary.
  • Provides rapid improvement in visual quality.

Limitations

  • May not be suitable for every patient; the suitability of the eye structure should be evaluated beforehand.
  • Although rare, problems related to infection or lens compatibility may occur.
  • Requires regular follow-up and monitoring.
